MY REVIEW
4.5 Stars

First of all, I'd like to thank ArdentProse for including me in the blog tour and sending me an ARC of this amazing book. As soon as I read the blurb and saw the cover, I knew it would be a story of heartbreak but also healing. And it was. Nicole Williams is a new-to-me author, as I have only read about Jude and Lucy so far, though I've purchased just about all of her books, so I was pleased to get to read another story by her. I love her writing and her character development in each book I read. This story really touched me and broke me, just as I knew it would...

From the prologue, where we meet Torrin and Jade for the first time, I felt in my gut that these two characters-best friends and lovers-were going to make me feel so many emotions. And at the end of that first meeting, my heart already hurt for both of them. Then we jumped into the story, 10 years later, and I was taken on a journey that made me dizzy from all sorts of feelings.

Poor Jade. She was just seventeen years old when she was taken-from her life, her family, and the boy she loved with all her heart and soul. After being away for ten years, it's a struggle to get back to any sense of normalcy or being. How can she just pick up her life? She missed out on graduating with her friends. Her siblings grew up and moved out. Her parents were broken since her disappearance...but most of all, her love. The boy she wanted to start her life with in the future. How can she even look at him and see any possibility of a future when she doesn't know him anymore? He's not the same boy she shared all those wonderful memories with.
He's now a man, with a shattered heart. How can she heal him when she has to heal herself first?

It was so heartwrenching to see all she went through. Once she was back home, the world never stopped going on, but she wasn't the same girl anymore. She was stripped of who she'd been before and it was hard to watch her become alienated from her family. Sure they were glad to have her back after ten years, not knowing where she'd been and how she was treated. And yet they didn't know how to act around her. They treated her like a porcelain doll, fragile and weak. I couldn't imagine being in her shoes and feeling lost and alone...with the people you knew so well. The same people who gave you life. It wasn't fair..for any of them.
But my heart hurt for Torrin, the most I think. He lost the love of his life in a snap of a finger, a blink of an eye. For ten years. And yet, that sweet guy never stopped looking, even when the rest of the world gave up. I wished we had his point of view during that time, right after and how he changed and went through so much without her. All he had was his memories of her to keep him living, pushing forward. I'm not going to give away his story, but I wanted chapters or even just paragraphs from his voice, to feel his emotions, settle in his head so I could have a better understanding of his loss. How he decided on his career path. How he realized certain things and then pressed on from that moment. I guess I'm just partial to the male point of view. I love when we get to feel their internal struggles and see their vulnerability under all that male exterior when faced with such tragedy involving the love of their life. But that's just me.

When they were reunited, parts of their interaction felt stiff, but once they were around each other more, I felt the connection between them again. I get that Jade had so much to work through before she could just jump into relationships and I appreciated Nicole taking the time to develop their renewed friendship. I could feel the pain they both suffered when around each other, knowing they loved once and yet after ten years, everything changed. They weren't the same people. It was heartbreaking. At times I wanted to yell at them to get it together, admit their feelings and deal with it. Then again, I understood Jade's hesitation, her reluctance.  She was very strong, after being imprisoned for so long. It's hard to know what you would do unless you were in that situation. And to face it all alone. I admired her strength.

Though the ending to me was more open-ended, I felt a sense of hope for these two for the future. I sincerely hope we get more of them. And possibly a short story from Torrin's side. I really want to delve into his head, his deepest thoughts. But either way, more of them would be so awesome. Maybe ten years in the future or something. Okay, five would be fine.

All in all, I was thankful I got to read an early copy of this story. I know most of my friends are going to enjoy it. Now I need to read the rest of Williams' books so I can meet more wonderful characters. I highly recommend Collared to those seeking a story of survival, healing and second-chances. Great job!

I feel something swirl at my ankle, then it grabs me. I’m sucked under instantly as the undercurrent slams me to the ocean bottom and tumbles me around. It’s happened before, so I don’t panic. I know that once it’s done with me, it will let me go. Once it’s twirled me around a few times, it will leave me alone.
I can feel it starting to lose momentum when two arms brace around me and break me free. When we pop through the surface, Torrin spins me around, terror drawing up his expression.
“Are you okay?” He holds me with one hand, inspecting me with the other like he’s going to find an elbow or organ missing.
I’m totally wet. I feel ocean water draining out of my ears and nose. My hair feels like a cyclone just had its way with it, and I know my skin’s red and blotchy from the sand exfoliation treatment I just received free of charge.
I laugh. This is what alive feels like. I remember.
It’s adrenaline pulsing so hard in my veins they feel about to burst. It’s feelings that twist my stomach into knots. It’s feeling so cold my body goes numb and so attracted to someone my body feels the opposite of numb.
This is it. Living. I can almost feel the blood warm in my veins as it starts to run again.
“Why are you laughing?” Torrin’s face flashes with relief when he sees I’m okay, but he doesn’t let go of me.
On the beach, my parents slowly make their way back to the beach blankets once they’ve seen I’m okay.
“That was fun.” I rub my stomach because it hurts. From the laughter. I’d forgotten stomachs could hurt from laughing.
“Fun? Not my idea of fun.”
I wipe the water from my face and find just as much sand pasted to it. “What’s your idea of fun then?”
Torrin’s still shaking his head when he suddenly shouts, “This!”
He pulls me under the water with him. He lets me go right away, but I don’t want him to. I don’t want him to ever let go.
I splash him when he resurfaces a few feet away. “Did you just dunk me?”
He splashes back. “I just did.”
“You’ve heard of payback, right?” I move a little closer, ignoring the way I can feel my parents watching us from the beach.
“I’ve heard of it. Not really a big fan though.”
When I lunge at him and try to knock him under, he’s clearly bracing for it because all I do is smash into him. My wet body against his, our arms tangled together, our faces too close to not be aware of where each other’s mouths are . . .
“What’s this payback thing again?” He’s practically gloating, so I come at it from a different angle.
My eyes drop to his mouth and stay there until his lips part from his breaths coming faster. When my hand curves against the side of his face, sweeping down the line of his jaw, I feel his chest moving hard against mine. His arms tangle tighter behind me because I’m slipping through them. When that doesn’t work, he hoists me higher, and his arms form a net beneath my backside.
I need to clear my head before I can’t remember what I’m doing.
My eyes lift to his and hold there. When he blinks, a drop of water rolls off his eyelashes. My hand slides lower until my thumb is touching the corner of his mouth.
“Torrin?” I whisper, my mouth lowering.
“Yeah?” His voice is rough, coming from low in his throat.
I move my mouth just outside his ear. “This . . . is . . .”—I burst free of his hold and slide his legs out from beneath him with my foot—“payback!”
He goes down with a surprised shout and an explosive splash. I’m laughing again, and so is he when he pops his head above the water.
“Well played, Childs.”
“Thank you very much,” I say with a bow, hoping he can’t see right through me the way I feel he can sometimes.
If he does, he’ll know. He’ll know I would have rather kissed him. I would rather still be kissing him. He’ll know that while I’m content to put most of the past behind me, there’s one part I want to pack and bring with me to the future.
           Him.
I think he might see it though, because I think I might see it in him too.
The sun catches his eyes just right when he looks at me. “You always had a way of taking the ground right out from beneath me.”

MY REVIEW

4 Stars
I've read most of Jane's books and I'm impressed with each one she publishes. Even though this wasn't my favorite of hers, I still enjoyed it for what it was. Maybe mafia-type books just aren't my thing, probably because I haven't read enough of them, but I was still able to sit back and enjoy the ride. I can't help but become captivated by her writing and falling for her complex characters. She just has a way of keeping a firm grip on your emotions. Even when you least expect it.

And this one was definitely an unexpected journey.

From the moment we meet Laney and Ash in Vegas during the prologue, I knew things were going to be complicated for them. I could feel the tension between the two so intensely and that was just the beginning of their emotional love story. Ash was such a complex character and I felt all of his emotions through his body language. And boy, his dancing skills...*fanning self* Laney had her own share of problems, which I felt was handled quite tenderly. She went through so much and it broke my heart. Hell, Ash broke my heart too. But together, they managed to piece it back together. Jane explores some tough subjects you don't come across very often and she did it with dignity and respect. I don't want to get into the body of the story; you can get a feel for what it's about in the blurb.

I will say though, Jane's writing style is so fluid and easy to get into. All of her stories are so different and original. This story was probably her darkest to date but I feel, the darker the better. There was a bit of everything; suspense, danger, romance, and plenty of drama in the mix. But I enjoyed experiencing the dance aspect, Ash's true passion in life. When he was on stage, you could understand why he loved it so much. He was just talented and sexy. And a Russian, just like me. I do have to mention, I've never read a book about a Russian before so that was quite different and refreshing.

I loved the fact that Laney was the one to help Ash through his problems, despite having so much of her own suffering. She was selfless and strong, as far as heroines go. It's usually the females that are the damsel in distress and the hero coming to save the day...yet in this story, it's the opposite. One thing I can count on from Jane is her constant character development. I never find her characters to be weak, male or female and I appreciate that.
The epilogue was perfect! After everything they went through together, I was so happy to see how it wrapped up. Jane is notorious for bringing on the feels and leaving us devastated in the end, so I was glad we got an HEA for this sweet couple.
Going forward, I just know most of my friends are going to enjoy this book. Well, this is the start of a new series and I'm actually interested to see where the next one takes me. As always, I'll read anything by Jane Harvey-Berrick because I never know what to expect but it damn sure isn't predictable. And I just can't help myself.

Thanks to ArdentProse for  providing me with an ARC and to Jane for a nice, entertaining read.

Laney POV
His eyes glowed, passion firing through them. Then he lowered his head and kissed the back of my hand.

It was a sweet, old fashioned gesture, totally at odds with the lust I saw as he let his eyes stroll across my body, seemingly unable to choose between my breasts or my lips.

I helped make up his mind by folding my arms around him and tugging his head down so I could press my lips against his.

He opened his mouth, then proceeded to give me the hottest, slowest, most tantalizing kiss I’d ever had. He was telling me that he was in control and he’d kiss me the way he damn well wanted.

Playful Ash, serious Ash, flirty Ash—I couldn’t help thinking that sexy-as-sin Ash was proving to be my favorite.

His hips moved in a slow rhythm that may have been dancing or may have been back-to-basics grassroots grinding. I reached down for the heat between his legs, massaging the growing bulge at the front of his jeans.

A shudder ran through his body and he ground harder against my hand. I couldn’t wait to be skin to skin.

I unbuttoned his shirt clumsily, fingers deft as sausages as I tried to get at his bare skin. He laughed against my lips and lifted his arms so I could pull the cotton over his head.

Skin like warm silk, smooth and soft, covering hard muscle, my fingers dragged across the planes and ripples of his chest and stomach, then fluttered over the welts and scarred flesh of his back.

Ash kicked off his shoes, and rid himself of the rest of his clothes before prowling toward me. His eyes said, naked now! Mine replied, make me.

He swept me from my feet so swiftly, my stomach swooped, and he carried me to the bed, our bed, working my clothes from my body between slow, hot kisses.

I closed my eyes, needing some defense against his beautiful face and the sensations that threatened to overwhelm me. He was an ocean wave, the high tide, and I was drowning in happiness and physical pleasure.

AP - about the author.jpg

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to write. Perhaps it was growing up in a village well known for its mystery and folklore, which sparked my imagination as a child.
I enjoy writing in several different genres, and I've just published my first romcom, 'Dazzled'.
All my books have a little me in them, and I'm inspired by the personal stories of those around me. It's often from a simple discussion overheard in the train ('Exposure'), in a café, or in the street, where ideas for characters or scenes come to me.
I fell in love with both Sam ('The New Samurai') and the eponymous Sebastian in 'The Education of Sebastian' and the sequel 'The Education of Caroline', and missed them desperately once I'd finished their stories. I love writing dialogue and always try to include touches of humour in the most poignant stories.
Whether you like adult romance novels, new or young adult writing, thrillers, or fantasy, I hope you'll enjoy the journey through my stories.
